This drive puts Buffalo's proprietary front end on a big name hard drive to achieve excellent performance and includes encryption capability. However, the custom interface stores data on the drive in a format that is not recognized by Windows.
Although the contained hard drive is warranted by its manufacturer for 2 years, Buffalo only warrants the assembly for 1 year. Looking closer, the custom circuit card is not fabricated to as high a quality level as the hard drive, leading one to expect the custom circuit card to fail first. If that happens you will be stuck with all your data securely stored on a functioning drive with no way to retrieve it.
For close to the same money, I recommend buying a hard drive and separate enclosure. You will increase your long term likelihood of data retrieval, and isn?t that what backup is about?
